Badri is a form of wild berry. The Lord Badrina:th is in tapasvi form under the Badri tree (a favorite of Mahalakshmi) and hence this divyadesam is known as Badrikashram. The ashram term is due to the fact that he taught the world the Thirumantram (performed upade:sa of Thirumantram). Some say that Mahalakshmi: herself took the form of the Badri tree to protect the Lord from the harsh light and heat of the sun during his penance.
