Parasu means axe in Sanskrit. Parasurama was born to Sage Jamadagni and Renuka as their youngest son and was named as Rama. This Rama was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who came to destroy the rulers of the land, who had become arrogant and were causing trouble to their citizens. Given that Rama had a great weapon, the axe called as Parasu, he is known as Parasurama and is referred by that name mostly.
