Sri Vara vara muni (Manavala Mamuni) in his Upadesa Ratinamalai describes Andal as anju kudikku santhathiya:i. This verse has two definitions. 1. If we start counting the groups or family from Poigaia:zhva:r to Peria:zhvar, we can see five groups. Mudalazhvars (Poigaiaazhvar, Boodhaththaazhvar and Peyaazhvar) belong to one group. Thirumazhisai aazhvar, Nammaazhvar, Kulasekaraazhvar and Periyaazhvar will form a separate group each, totalling to five groups. Andal is regarded as the descendants of the five groups. 2. “Anju” means fear in Tamil. Azhvars out of their overwhelming devotion and Bhakthi had a fear that, something bad might happen to Perumal. Hence we can group the entire set of Azhvars as Anju Kudi and Andal as their daughter.
