Why are some temples referred to as Divyadesams? How many divyadesams are there?
Divya Desams refer to the 108 Lord Vishnu temples that have been mentioned in the 4000 divne verses (Nalayira Divy aPrabhandam) sung by the Azhvars. Divya in the Tamil language means divine and Desam indicates “land” or “place” (temple) – Divine place. Since they have been sung by the Azhvars themselves we consider them to be the most important in our tradition and recommending visiting all these temples atleast once if possible. Of the 108 temples, 106 are present on the earth and two outside of the Earthly realms.
