Project Description
Vikasa Tarangini adopted 12 villages in Mandasa and Palasa Mandals in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. As part of this program, plans have been approved for construction of roads, provide drinking water, educational facilities and construction of Eco San toilets.
In the first phase of adoption, Vikasa Tarangini started construction of Eco San toilets – a toilet per house. Current estimate is to cover upto 4000 houses. Estimated cost to construct one house is approximately Rs. 18,000. Each toilet unit is 31/2 ft. X 41/2 ft, height – 10 ft. ( 2 ft. tank, 2 ft. underground and 6 ft. roof). THIS IS THE VISION OF SRI CHINNA JEEYAR SWAMIJI.
Toilets are being constructed to prevent “open defecation”. When the tank is full, the defecated waste is disposed off at another place which is highly unhygienic.
What is the solution to this problem ?
Having given a much thought to this, a solution by way of “bio toilets” have been introduced.
These bio toilets have been installed for a comfortable and hygienic way of releasing human waste.
This method requires very less water and there is absolutely no odour and no breeding of mosquitoes around.
In fact, mosquitoes are not found to be present in the vicinity of the bio toilets.
The waste from these bio toilets will not pollute any water body around be it lakes or community wells or any other.
These bio toilets which convert the human waste into manure in just 48 hours are installed by the Vikasa tarangini volunteers with the able guidance of the spiritual leader, His Holiness Sri Tridandi Ramanuja Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji.
These bio toilets have now been installed in many villages in the mandasa district.
A SOLUTION TO PREVENT OPEN DEFECATION .
The government is giving extreme importance to the issue of constructing a private toilet in every house.
The government in its earlier budget had announced great amount of funds for the villages which have adopted the facility of a private toilet in every house .
These toilets have a water tank attached for the purpose of flushing. Every time the toilet is used , large quantity of water is required for flushing.
In houses that have western toilets a flush tank flushes out consuming large quantities of water.
A septic tank in the ground is constructed for collecting the waste. Depending on the usage of these toilets, these tanks get filled and when they are emptied, the water bodies like community wells, lakes and rivers get polluted .
Once the septic tank overflows with the long usage , the waste has to be collected and disposed off at another place. Mobile septic tanks are making money to collect the overflow of the waste from houses to dispose off in the outskirts of the villages.
Generally, disposing off activities are carried out after midnight .
This becomes a breeding place for mosquitoes.
The makers of bio toilets argue that the existing private toilets in every house is as bad as defecating in the open.
Mother earth must be relieved from being dumped with the human waste.
WHAT IS THE SPECIALITY OF BIO TOILETS ?
A small tank is provided under evey toilet unit. Into this tank , 1/4th or half a kg of earth worms are introduced .
These earth worms consume the human waste immediately which becomes its food and their waste in turn becomes manure.
In this kind of bio toilet water is required only for cleaning purposes there by reducing the consumption.
There is absolutely no odour released in the usage of bio toilets .
These are provided with comfortable seats as in the western toilets.
After a period of 48 hours , the manure can be collected and used. For this purpose, a door is fixed in the lower part of the tank.
A pipe too is installed to release the excess water collected in the tank.
INSTALLATION OF 2000 BIO TOILETS IN MANDASA.
Bio toilet units are available in two sizes –
a) 4′ width X 5′ height .
b)3.5′ width X 5′ height .
They are installed at a height of two and half feet from the ground level.
Prefabricated cement moulds are installed in each corner prior to the installation of the bio toilets.
Preparation for installing 2000 bio toilets have commenced and 200 have already been successfully installed .
This bio toilet facility has drawn the attention of many.
The government colleges in Srikakulam and about 20 such in Aamadavalasa have adopted this system.

The Mandasa Vasudeva Perumal temple which lay in a dilapidated condition for hundreds of years has been reconstructed and reestablished by Swamiji.
On the same account , the Vikasa tarangini seva organization under the propriety of HH Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swami has adopted 12 villages of Mandasa.
They have determined to install the bio toilets in all these villages .
The government on its behalf has come forward to contribute rs.12000 for the bigger ones and rs.15000 for the smaller units . It is estimated that each bio toilet unit would cost rs.20000.
The difference in the amount will be borne by the organization.
TO PREVENT MOTHER EARTH FROM GETTING POLLUTED.
HH Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji strongly feels that defecating in the open and disposing of the waste from the toilets into the open affect Mother earth equally.
Mother earth should not be trapped by pollution.
Only then , a healthy environment can be obtained for the people.
It is for this very reason Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji stresses upon the installation of bio toilets that converts human waste into manure.
There are many advantages to this system of sanitation .
Mainly , water can be conserved in plenty . Large houses and offices can incorporate this facility.
