We all know the term, Veda. Most people who know the term, Veda have probably heard of another term, Upanishad. Those who heard the term, Upanishad may have heard the term Bramha Su:thras. Upanishads are the essence of Ve:da. Bramha Suthra:s are in essence Upanishads but in a different format called laws.

What is the purpose of having them in a different format?

Have you heard of Newton’s laws of motion? There are three laws of motion. They are nothing but statements describing the relation between the forces acting on a body and the motion of the body. They are formulated by English Physicist and mathematician Issac Newton forming the foundation of classical mechanics. However, the exercise of forming laws / statements to crisply define certain fundamentals of a subject is not new.

Our sages know that it is not enough to learn about air, water, space, earth, trees, animals. It is essential to know the deeper secrets of the cause of existence.  Hence ages ago, Veda Vyasa maharshi put together the essence of Vedas, i.e. Upanishads into the format of statements, laws giving an insight into the cause of this life, how it works,

who is the cause, what is the relation between the cause and us, where are we headed after this life, what do we do to reach there etc.  They are called Bramha Su:thras and are 545 in number.

Can you give me an example of what those laws are like?

The top four of the 545 Bramha Su:thras are called Chathussu:thri, the four laws. They together have the essence of all the 545 su:thras.

  • Adha:tho bramha jigna:sa
  • Janma:dhyasya yathaha
  • Sa:sthra yo:nithva:th
  • Thatth samanvaya:th

What do they mean?

It’s great to have the desire to know what they mean. However, Vedic knowledge is not like any other knowledge that you can benefit from by just learning it. It requires a genuine desire that ultimately matures into utmost belief. Bhagava:n, GOD then works His ways to make you travel to Him and with Him in the ocean of this existence. He does it in a way that you are not troubled or hindered by any limitations.

I asked for the meaning of Bramha Su:thras. Why did you bring up God?

yasya nisvasitham ve:daha

Veda is the breath of God

Bhagava:n, God is the essential thatthva that is the aim and closure for any knowledge. Even if you spend hundreds of hours in research, learn thousands of facts in various sub-streams of knowledge, or earn lakhs worth of money every month, the closure to any knowledge, God lies in the main stream – Vedic knowledge. It can only be understood and experienced if you BELIEVE in it.

Why is Belief important here? Why can’t I learn it like any other subject?

This knowledge is not about things you can physically ‘see’. It is about pra:na, a:thma, Bhagava:n all of which are invisible thatthvas. Someone must teach us about them. It must be only Veda. Only those great rushis, ancient scientists of Vedic knowledge and the recent time acharyas, Elders who follow their footsteps can grace one with such knowledge. Hence, if you do not Believe in them, the invisible divine thatthvas can neither be realised nor experienced.

This sounds difficult. What happens if I don’t put any effort in this?

Let us not be one of those who take birth, try to fulfill bodily needs, leave the body, and become absorbed in by the kalagarbha, the tides of time!

At a minimum, tolerate some pain to do the least you can for being given the human body, a body that is capable of understanding beyond bodily needs. Even a vaccine taken for the benefit of a healthy body pinches a bit and later secures you with some immunity. Why not take that pinch of spending time to understand things that secure you with a better next phase in your journey of life? Think about it…
