Question : Which amongst these qualities is the primary identifier of the soul
Jna:na?
A:nanda
Se:shathava
Posted On : 08-02-2019
ANSWER : The primary identifier of the soul is the quality of se:shathva. Check notes for more information
Note : Swami Ramanuja wanted Kuresa to find the answer to this question from Goshtipurna.
Goshtipurna asks Kuresa to look at the pasuram adiye:nulla:m in Thiruvaimozhi
In 8th decade of the
8th centum of Thiruvai:mozhi, Namma:lvar graces
us with two pa:surams which reveal the nature of
sriyah pathi (Lord Sri:manna:ra:yana). Of these, the
first pa:suram is ‘kangal sivandu’, the second one is
‘adiye:nulla:n’. In the second pa:suram, Namma:lvar
intends to convey that Lord is the in-dweller of the
soul and shines through it. He could have as well
put it as ‘Lord dwells in the soul’ or ‘the Lord dwells
in me’. Instead he puts it as ‘adiye:nulla:n’, meaning
‘Lord dwells in this da:sa (servant)’. Here, the soul is
indicated by the word ‘adiye:n’ which in turn implies
‘se:shathva’. Thus, being a servant- se:shathva - is the
primary attribute of the soul. Go:shttipu:rna revealed
this to Ku:re:sa by reminding him the pa:suram sung
by namma:lvar !

Seeing him struggle to dig a garden, Lord himself came down disguised as a small boy and insisted that He will help Anantha:zhwan. When the boy would not go after telling many times not to interfere in his work, Anantha:zhwa:n threw the crowbar at the boy to scare him away. The boy ran away and disappeared into the main sanctum of temple. Anantha:zhwa:n and local priests noticed that blood was dripping from the chin of deity, from the place where the small boy was hit by crowbar. Anantha:zhwa:n felt very sad that he did not recognize the Lord when He came to him. They quickly offered camphor to the deity on chin, to take care of that injury. Lord offered a boon that as a mark of respect to Anantha:zhwa:n, he will wear the camphor / karpu:ram mark on his chin forever. Even today, when we visit Tirumala temple, we can see the crowbar that was used by Anantha:zhwa:n hanging near the sanctum.
Question : When we go to Peruma:l temples, after we get ti:rtham, the priest places the divine feet of God (made in shape of a small crown) on our head. What is that crown-like thing called?

ANSWER : Sathako:pam or Satha:ri
Note : Namma:zhwa:r is known with that name - Sathako:pam or Satha:ri. As he thought of Lord's divine feet when he attained parama padam, he became Lord's feet. So whenever we are offered Satha:ri in Peruma:l temple after ti:rtham, we bow down with utmost respect as we are getting touch with Lord's feet or Namma:zhwar himself (bhagavat-pa:da sambandham). If we go to a sannidhi where the main deity is Namma:zhwar himself (and not Peruma:l), then the pa:dukas or divine feet of Namma:zhwar are referred to as "Ra:ma:nujam". That is because Bhagavad Ra:ma:nuja is considered as the divine feet of Namma:zhwar. If we go to a sannidhi where the main deity is Bhagavad Ra:ma:nuja, then the pa:dukas or divine feet of A:cha:rya Ra:ma:nuja are referred to as "Da:sarathi" or "Mudaliya:nda:n". That brings us to today's question...
Question : What does nam peruma:I mean and why is He called so?

ANSWER : NAM PERUMA :L
means
OUR LORD
Note : Jewel of the day
When Malik Kafur invaded Srirangam the second time, he was determined to destroy the temple. The devotees took the idol of perumal (the procession deity) away from the temple. Lot of devotees lost their life in the process. After about 60 years when the idol was brought back to the temple another idol was already established in the temple. There was an old blind washerman who used to wash the clothes of perumal before the idol was taken away. He said he could identify the idol based on the smell of the ablution water (theertham from abhishekam) from the idol . When he recognized the idol he said this is "our perumal" in joy and hence the name "nam perumal. "
And indeed He is our own Lord as He’s the one who is always thinking about our well being.
