One may be living in India, another in Australia, and yet another somewhere else in the world. One might be a doctor, another an actor, someone else a chef, another an electrician, or perhaps a businessman or politician by profession.

People may be in different stages of life — some are busy as students, others are occupied as married householders, while some focus only on learning and practicing a philosophical way of life.

Individuals may be male or female, young or old.

There is one thing at core level that they are all doing in common. Everyone is consuming certain invisible ‘food’.

What is this invisible ‘food’?

We think we are all leading our lives but what we are ultimately doing is consuming the invisible food. The invisible ‘food’ is nothing but karma phala, the fruits of karma. Meaning, the resulting consequences of one’s karma. Every soul, i.e. each one of us have been accruing loads of karma, all of which gradually gets ready to yield phala. With every birth, a certain portion of that karma gets ‘cooked’ and ‘served’ on a ‘plate’ with the divine intent that it gets ‘consumed’ so the soul is no longer bound to its effects. The ultimate goal is to have a zero balance of karma phala, so there is final ultimate liberation for soul.

What does it mean by ‘cooking’ karma? What is involved in this ‘cooking’ process?

The mechanism that enables a soul to experience karma phala requires creating a suitable body through which it can be consumed. The suitable body is cooked partly in a father’s body and is further cooked completely in a mother’s womb. The suitable body is composed of a gross portion and a subtle portion. The gross portion is made of pancha bhuthas and more. The subtle portion is made of manas and more. That is how a body is made to consume the karma phala allocated for the lifetime.

Ignorant of this truth, we do not consume it in a way that it ‘digests’ properly and gets ‘burnt’. We not only consume it improperly resulting in ‘indigestion’, but we also accrue thousand folds more into the stock during each lifetime.

Thus, instead of eternal liberation, we have been taking births on this land eternally! Hence, the souls are traveling through innumerable bodies, i.e. cycles of birth and death.

That is why, Ve:da says
ani:saya so:chathi muhyama:naha
we ‘eat’ more and we ‘cry’

Shouldn’t one be happy to be born in this world that is full of colors and choices? What is wrong with the cycle of births and deaths?

The questions seem logical. These questions/thoughts lead to certain lifestyle choices one makes. For a quick overview of such thoughts, the resulting different lifestyle choices and the implications….

6 Philosophical Lifestyles

Why is this entire process highly error-prone and with such minimal success rate?

This question again seems logical. However, it is an unfair one. Ex: Are you to blame the process if your child doesn’t follow the said instructions and lands up in trouble? Similarly, while God has been compassionate to offer the souls all the help He could in an eternally existing setup, it is us who have not been keen on following the guidance during our lifetime here.

Looks like we are very ‘naughty’ and ‘ignorant’ children of God, can He not help by making the process simpler?

He did and He is continuing to do…! Here’s how…

    • A:di Mu:lam, original root cause
As the original root cause, He felt concerned for all of us. In this suddha sattva (purest form of consciousness) form, He took a sankalpa, divine resolve, to protect us. He created the necessary raw material. He assumed another form as Kshi:ra:bdi sayana to begin the divine task. This is the first step to help.

    • Khsi:ra:bdi sayana, i.e in the milky ocean of supreme divine qualities…
In this form, He gave rise to Chathurmukha Bramha from His navel. He handed over Vedas, the divine guide and tasked him to create suitable bodies for all souls. He hoped that the souls will use the bodies for the purpose they are made. Otherwise, the souls (i.e. we) there would not have been a way to return to our original state of bliss. This is the second step to help.

    • Avatha:ras, incarnations
He descended to the Earth innumerable times as Matsya, Kurma, Narasimha, Vamana, Thrivikrama, Rama, Krushna…
      Bhagavad Gi:tha says…
      bahu:ni me: vyathi:tha:ni janma:ni thavacha arjuna
incarnated innumerable times from aeons ago

With every incarnation, He made Himself more and more accessible. This is the third step He took and is continuing to take to help us.

We may not understand the length of the term that He has helping us from… and thus Veda says ana:di, beginningless and eternal
      tha:nyaham ve:da sarva:ni nathvam ve:ttha paranthapa

    • Antharya:mi, the supreme indweller and Archa: Vigraha, deity form
Today, He is making the process even simpler as a deity. The deity form that you worship at home or in a temple is accessible for you every day. This is the charama seema, the highest limit to His divine quality of being accessible. He won’t speak to you like you speak to Him. He won’t eat what you offer Him.

He won’t respond in material terms, because He is not here for that purpose. He did not come to you in need of materials. He came to you for you. He takes in the sraddha, interest and devotion, you show through the material offerings and offers you His divine love which strengthens you and prepares you for what you want to achieve. He made Himself archaka para:dhi:na, at the will of the one hosting Him.

He did and He is continuing to do…! Here’s how…

Archa: vigraha form is also a reflection of how He exists within you as antharya:mi, the indwelling Supreme Lord. What we must remember is that the same A:di Mu:lam is with you in the deity form and within you as antharya:mi. These are the fourth and fifth steps He took to help you…

He is making the process simpler. It is us who must sincerely make attempts to understand, realize and benefit from this truth. It is not because He isn’t accessible, but because we don’t trust in His existence no matter what He does or says. We think we can navigate through this samsa:ra ourselves! It’s not possible. The sooner we realize, the better it is for us.

Let’s take His help, i.e. understand the nature of the invisible ‘food’, karma phala, through His teachings from an acharya. Turn on the green light of readiness to take His help so we don’t miss out on His grace when He decides to burn the accrued stocks of karma. He burns it instantly, even faster than the large heaps of cotton burning quickly with a single sparkle of fire.
