Panchangam, the Vedic calendar dates our current existence to 1,955,885,121 years, nearly 2 billion years. This is not simply an estimate, it’s an exact count as revealed by ancient rushis and sages in the form of Vedic knowledge. It was back then when God appeared as Sri Vara:ha Swami to protect mother Earth from the claws of Hiranya:ksha.  Our timeless Vedic literature is in line with modern science, which states that life came into existence around 200 crore years ago on this planet.

Hiranya:ksha (the arrogant and ignorant rakshasa/demon) was terrorizing Earth. He was able to weaken the planet so much that it lost the ability to sustain orbit. This was another kind of “pandemic virus” for which God appeared in the form of a divine boar to alleviate mother Earth. Vara:ha Swami placed mother Earth back onto proper orbit and then came down to Tirumala Hills to remain in Deity form. Vara:ha Purana clearly states the longitudinal and latitudinal values of the Sri Vara:ha Swami deity in Tirumala w.r.t the position that He first appeared (on the Himalayas mountainside).

If you want to compare evidence from modern science to that of the Vedic timeline for Vara:ha Swami in Thirumala Hills, observe the Sila: To:ranam (rock arch) in Thirumala.  Modern carbon dating places the rock arch formation to more than 150 crores years ago.  This number is close to what Vara:ha Purana states.  However, the Purana gives an exact number as opposed to only an estimate.

Just as Vara:ha Swami protected mother Earth from Hiranya:ksha, we pray that He takes charge again of teaching a lesson to all those arrogant like Hiranya:ksha We see leaders of countries like China who are forgetting to stay within their boundaries. We see people who think of no other greater power than themselves, forgetting the supremacy of God. We pray that Sri Vara:ha Swami protects all those who surrender unto Him for the greater good of society at large.  Let’s seek His refuge, particularly on this day, the day of his appearance on Earth.

“If you understand me and think of me when your senses, mind, and body are working properly, then I will take care of you if all those are falling apart”! – Vara:ha Swami

Bhagavad Ra:ma:nuja:cha:rya sought this great blessing for us because we may not be in a position to control our thoughts during our last breath.  Antima smruti, the final thought, is critical in determining one’s path after leaving the current body.

How can one feel confident in their attempt to surrender to God?
Is it a mental submission or physical gesture?

When one performs every karma (duty) as an instrument of God, and submit the results to Him, life itself becomes a yajna. Arrogance will have no place to exist in the mind. Ignorance will disappear. You will be free from the bondage that limits you from carrying out greater deeds. Vara:ha Swami teaches us the same by eliminating Hiranya:ksha (arrogance personified as a demon). The same is said in Bhagavad Gita as:

yajna:rdha:th karmano::nyathra
lo:ko:: yam karma bandhanaha |
thadarttham karma kaunthe:ya!
muktha sangas sama:chara ||
