Attaching a tail to the kite helps it fly more stably by adding some needed mass and drag to the lower back area of the kite. The tail gets to fly up along with the kite just by being attached to it despite no connection to the rope. Sages use this example to explain the hidden intricacies of sanga, attachment.

We hear quite a lot from many preachers that attachment is ‘bad’. It ‘holds’ you from reaching eternal heights. Is that true? Not necessarily!

Sages say…

sangaha sarva:thmana: thya:jyaha
give up attachment completely…
sache:th ha:thum na sakyathe:
if you are not able to do so,
sadbhihi sangaha sada:ka:ryaha
then be more attached to good people..
sadbhihi sango:hi bhe:shajam
because such attachment is the medicine

If you have a clogged pipe caused by ‘dirty’ water, you can’t say no to using ‘water’ for clearing it. You must use ‘qualified’ water to unclog it. Add a suitable acid to water and pressure push it against the clog. Water did not cause clog, it was the dirt.

Similarly, attachments are not bad, attachment with the ‘wrong’ ideas, ‘wrong’ people and for ‘wrong’ reasons causes pain and bondage. When you learn to conduct correctly with people and surroundings, that becomes the right medicine to clear your past ‘wrong’ conduct.

How do I know who to be attached to?

A good person is one whose practices are such that he is not loved just by friends, family, but also by those who look at that person as an enemy. Not just by people but also by nature! Is there such a person in the history of mankind?

Yes, it is Sri Rama!

Sumanthra reported to Dasaratha that on his way back from dropping off Rama to the forests, he noticed that…

api vruksha:ha parimla:na:ha (trees were all dried up)
sa pushpa:nkura ko:raka:ha (buds did not bloom)
upathaptho:dakaha nadyaha (rivers were releasing hot vapors)
palvala:ni sara:msicha (including small and large water bodies)…

vishaye:the: maha:ra:ja ra:ma vyasana karsitha:ha (from the pangs of separation with Rama as He became the…)

Surpanaka described Rama with 14 adjectives praising his form, qualities and more…

tharunau ru:pasampannau sukuma:rau mahabalau
pundari:kavisa:la:kshau chi:rakrushna:jina:mbarau |
phalamu:la:sanau da:nthau tha:pasau dharmacha:rinau
puthrau dasaratthasya:stha:m bhra:tharau ra:malakshmanau |
gandharvara:japrathimau pa:rtthivavyanjana:nvithau

tharuni: ru:pasampanna: sarva:bharanabhu:shitha:

[Aranyaka:nda, Sarga 19, verses 14 to 17]…

Ramachandra is a:darsa purusho:tthama, a mirror of the best personality/character. Put yourself across the mirror of Rama and you will see exactly what you are and where you stand for being called an ideal person.

Get inspired, get tied to the ‘kite’ and fly high…

Like a tail tied to a kite, tie yourself to good people and rise high in the hearts of everyone around you and nature too… Hanuman, representation of an acharya, is like Rama. Tie yourself to such acharyas. Supported by the knowledge bestowed by such acharyas, begin serving the divine world like Lakshmana who served the divine duo of Lord Rama and mother Sitha. That’s the kalyanam, the auspicious beginning of divine togetherness.
