Sri Ramayana has seven sections. Each of the sections such as Ayodhya, Aranya, Yuddha are named based on the content of the section. Sundara means beautiful. Ka:nda means section or part.

Why is Sundara Kanda the Beautiful Section of Sri Ramayana ?

Some say…

It is named the beautiful section because in this section…

  • Hanuman had the darsan of the greatest and the most beautiful mother Sitha, whose description he heard directly from Sri Rama

  •  Hanuman described to mother Sitha, the most beautiful form of Rama’s body to scale inch by inch to the finest detail to give her confidence that he can be trusted

  • The city of Lanka, it’s beauty and other beautiful elements in the city were described in detail

Acharyas say…

It is named the beautiful section because it describes the deeper essence of life through describing the…

  • the unparalleled greatness and beauty of Hanuman’s work

  • the core and the beautiful part of a soul’s journey

  • the real and natural eternal beauty of a soul, i.e. ourselves

Inner beauty and how it can protect one…

Sitha is taken to Lanka, experiences a painful time there, longs for Rama. Like mother Sitha being taken to Lanka…

We are each brought into a different human body. We experience limitations, hurdles, unfavorable situations, etc at some point in life. This kind of state not only applies at individual level, but collectively at the Universal level. Currently, the overall-state of the world can be described as being restless and disturbed with deadly diseases, animosity towards different groups, greedy nature, identity crisis, lack of clarity in people on life style choices etc…

world map with eyes

Sitha thinks Rama is not being compassionate to rescue her yet what she is experiencing is the result of her mistake, seeking ‘gold’ deer despite Rama’s warning.

We tend to blame someone else or God for our situation when in fact it is a result of our own mistakes from the past.

Sitha got under the influence of an inappropriate/unessential desire; this resulted in being captivated by Ravana, instead of under the protection of Rama.

We identify ourselves as body and believe that fulfilling body’s desires is our goal; this resulted in us getting under the control of manas instead of under the protection of God.

Rama selects the right messenger, Hanuman, in order to reunite with Sitha. He gives Hanuman His ring so that Sitha can trust Hanuman to be His messenger.

Rama giving Hanuman chudamani

God selects an acharya who is a va:gmi, exceptionally skilled in delivering God’s messages. He sends him to look for us in the body. Acharya locates us and establishes connection [with us, the a:thma, soul]. He gives the acharya His identifiers, the Sanka Chakra. Acharya gives the same to us and thus we believe in him to be the real messenger of God.

Hanuman crosses the ocean and the hurdles on the way to Lanka. He finds Sitha in a sad state, ready to give up on life.

Acharya rises above ego passing through all hurdles. He understands our state in the body and plans the right way to begin connecting with us.

Hanuman crossing ocean and dealing with the demons.

Sitha accepts her mistake of not listening to Rama and Lakshama w.r.t desiring ‘gold’ deer. She deeply and truly feels the guilt. She says…

mamaiva duskhkrutham kinchin mahadasthina na samsayaha

It is then, Hanuman fills hope in her by speaking of Rama and the recent happenings. Sitha then feels alive. He offers to take her with him.

We must accept the cause for our suffering. It is our mistake of not following the advise of God’s and that of devotees. Hanuman then fills hope in us by preaching about God and lets us know that how eagerly He is awaiting to protect us. We must wait for God to release us from the bondage of karma. We must not take that burden on ourselves or seek help from anyone else for the release because it is only Him who can do it.

Rama reaches Lanka. He kills the egoistic greedy rajasic, Ravana and replaces him with the sathvik humble and devoted, Vibheeshana

God enters the body, treats the manas, mind, of the proper way to think. He enables us to live in confidence as long as we live in the current body. When it is time, God lifts the soul through sushmuna na:di to paramapada, the state of eternal union with God.
