SAMPOORNA SUNDARAKANDA PARAYANAM ON EVERY AMAVASYA DAY
The Sundarakanda is the fifth of the seven Kandas (books or cantos) of the great Indian epic, the Srimad Valmiki Ramayana. It narrates the extraordinary journey of Lord Hanuman to Lanka in search of Mata Sitha, Her discovery, His delivery of Lord Rama’s message to Her, and His triumphant return after overcoming numerous obstacles. Beyond its captivating narrative, the Sundarakanda offers profound spiritual wisdom and timeless lessons on devotion, courage, perseverance, humility, and righteousness.
Sri Sri Sri Tridandi Ahobila Ramanuja Jeeyar Swamiji, a distinguished Sri Vaishnava spiritual leader and a devoted disciple of His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, has undertaken a Maha Sankalpa (sacred resolve) to organize the recitation of the Sampoorna Sundarakanda on every Amavasya (New Moon) day at Divya Saketam Kshetram, Sriramanagaram, Muchintal, Shamshabad to continue for 108 such occasions.
The inaugural recitation of the Sampoorna Sundarakanda under this sacred initiative was held on 25 June 2025 at the Divya Saketam Temple premises. This initiative has been undertaken to encourage devotion, spiritual discipline, and the regular study of the profound teachings of the Sundarakanda among the devotees.
The programme extends from morning until the afternoon. Before the commencement of the Sampoorna Sundarakanda Parayanam, Swamiji performs abhishekam (sacred ritual bathing) to Lord Hanuman with honey as an offering of devotion and reverence. The Parayanam comprises 68 Sargas (chapters). After the recitation of each Sarga, eight nivedanams (sacred food offerings) are presented. Each participating devotee receives a Shakti Kankanam (sacred wrist thread), which is to be worn or retained until the next Sundarakanda Parayanam on Amavasya day.
The recitation of the Sundarakanda is traditionally regarded as a powerful source of spiritual strength and inner peace. For a mind weighed down by fear, despair, or anxiety, it offers comfort, hope, and reassurance. Regular recitation can encourage concentration, build emotional strength, and clarity of thought, helping individuals meet life’s challenges with greater confidence.
The Sundarakanda serves as a beacon of hope, a guide to righteousness, and build unwavering devotion. Through the life and deeds of Lord Hanuman, it teaches us that mental strength, efficiency, wisdom, and humility are essential foundations of success. This is why the age-old belief that “reciting the Sundarakanda helps overcome hardships” continues to hold a cherished place in the hearts of devotees.
It is no wonder that the greatness of the Sundarakanda is celebrated in a popular shloka that beautifully captures the divine charm and significance of this sacred Kanda:
This evocative sloka celebrates the many dimensions of beauty embodied in the Sundarakanda—the divine beauty of Matha Sitha, the natural splendour of the forest, the literary excellence of the narrative, the noble character of Lord Hanuman, and the spiritual power of its sacred message. The repetition of the word Sundara emphasizes the beauty enveloping every aspect of this Kanda.
The Sundarakanda is not merely a narration of extraordinary events; it is a celebration of divine beauty, unwavering devotion, exemplary character, and spiritual wisdom. Its greatness lies in its ability to inspire faith, strengthen the human spirit, and illuminate the path of righteousness.
Lord Anjaneya (Hanuman) is the central figure of the Sundarakanda. His mission to reach Lanka, locate Matha Sitha, convey Lord Rama’s message to Her, assess Ravana’s strength, and return safely represents an extraordinary series of accomplishments.
These remarkable feats were made possible not merely by His immense physical strength but also by His wisdom, self-restraint, humility, courage, and unwavering obedience to Lord Rama. The Sundarakanda thus reveals a profound truth: strength becomes truly admirable when it is guided by noble character. This harmonious union of power and virtue reflects the very essence of Sundaram—beauty in its highest and most meaningful form.
1. Self-Confidence: Recognizing the Power Within:
Without the conviction that “I can do it,” even great abilities may remain unutilized. Before undertaking the momentous leap across the ocean to Lanka, Lord Hanuman had to be reminded of His extraordinary powers by Jambavan. Once He recognized His inherent strength, He accomplished what had appeared impossible.
This episode offers an invaluable lesson for all of us. At times, we may lose sight of our own abilities and allow fear or self-doubt to hinder the full realization of our potential. The right guidance, encouragement, and faith can awaken the strength within us and empower us to overcome insurmountable challenges.
2. Righteousness: Remaining Faithful to One’s Principles
Upon reaching Lanka, Lord Hanuman possessed the strength to bring back Mother Sitha on His own. Yet He remained steadfast in His commitment to Lord Rama’s mission and acted with restraint rather than impulsiveness. His conduct demonstrates that the pursuit of a worthy goal must never come at the cost of righteousness.
The Sundarakanda teaches us that success is meaningful only when achieved through the right means. Integrity, discipline, and strict adherence to one’s principles must guide every decision, regardless of the circumstances.
3. Surrender: Humility in the Service of the Divine
Before Mata Sitha, Lord Hanuman introduces Himself with profound humility as the servant of Lord Rama, declaring, “Dasoham Kosalendrasya”—“I am the servant of the Lord of Kosala.”
Despite His extraordinary strength and accomplishments, Hanuman never places Himself above the Divine mission He serves. His life exemplifies Saranagathi—surrender to the Divine—and demonstrates that true greatness lies not in personal glory but in selfless service.
His humility teaches us that the more we accomplish, the more grounded and devoted we should become. True excellence is enriched by modesty, gratitude, and a spirit of service.
The Sundarakanda also emphasizes the importance of thoughtful planning and strategic action. Lord Hanuman does not act in haste. Upon reaching Lanka, He carefully observes His surroundings, assesses potential dangers, and adapts His actions to the prevailing circumstances. His approach demonstrates the importance of patience, situational awareness, and sound judgment in achieving a difficult objective.
His conduct reminds us that success depends not only on the ability to act but also on knowing when, where, and how to act. Wisdom lies in understanding the situation before making a decision and choosing the most appropriate course of action.
Lord Hanuman’s greatness is reflected not only in His physical prowess and intellectual brilliance but also in His exemplary samskaram—culture, refinement, and noble conduct. Throughout His mission, He demonstrates respect, courtesy, self-control, and sensitivity to the circumstances and people around Him
Even in the hostile environment of Lanka, He exercises discernment and restraint in His interactions. His conduct reminds us that power without character can become destructive.
The Sundarakanda therefore offers a timeless lesson in leadership and personal development: genuine greatness emerges when strength is harmonized with wisdom, courage with compassion, and achievement with humility.
Its teachings inspire us to cultivate self-confidence, remain steadfast in righteousness, exercise wisdom in our actions, and surrender our efforts to the Divine. It reminds us that challenges are opportunities to discover our inner strength, that humility enhances greatness, and that sincere devotion provides direction and purpose to life.
The Sampoorna Sundarakanda Parayanam undertaken on every Amavasya day at Divya Saketam Kshetram is a sacred opportunity for devotees to immerse themselves in these timeless teachings through collective prayer and recitation. It fosters spiritual discipline, deepens devotion to Lord Hanuman and Lord Rama, and encourages participants to carry the values of the Sundarakanda into their daily lives.
When faith, discipline, wisdom, and dedication come together, even the most formidable challenges can be faced with courage and confidence. Just as Lord Hanuman crossed the vast ocean to fulfill Lord Rama’s mission, the Sundarakanda inspires each of us to cross the ocean of this Samsara with unwavering faith, noble conduct, and divine grace.
May the blessings of Lord Sri Rama, Mata Sitha, and Lord Hanuman bring peace, strength, prosperity, and spiritual well-being to all.
