It is said,
krushnam dharmam sana:thanam
Bhi:shma:cha:rya is so powerful that during the Kurukshethra war, he asked Lord Krishna to hold off from using the Sudarsana Chakra on him forcibly. Can you imagine facing the Lord and telling Him to hold off from what He is set forth to do?
Bhi:shma:cha:rya courageously told Krishna that he cannot be forced upon. However, he added that Krushna can order him and that he will abide by it because he is Krushna’s da:sa, one who is surrendered to Him.
When Yudhishtara asked Bhi:shma:cha:rya what made him so powerful. He clarifies that the source of the power is a result of chanting Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama (thousand names of God).
Vishnu Sahasra Nama is not any simple compilation, it is the compilation of divine sounds that many sages had the darshan of after ages of in-depth thapas, penance.
What does it mean to have darshan of a divine sound?
As the sages meditated with love for Lord, they experienced a quality, a form, or a deed of Lord and that experience of Lord emerged as the divine sound called na:ma. Sage Vedavyasa compiled them into a stotra and passed it to Bhi:shma:cha:rya.

We don’t need to know the meaning to experience their power… All it takes is acceptance to let that power work on you. If you know the meaning, that’s good too. However, not knowing the meaning does not make them less powerful.
Try to fill your heart with pure love for Sri Krushna and chant the stotra. It can protect you from the greatest of the hardships. There are numerous people who have benefited from it… As an example, we know someone who lost his speech after having undergone a surgery requiring a hole through his throat regained his speech after chanting Vishnu Sahasra Nama. Every divine name of Lord in the stotra is the name applicable to the highest dharma, Sri Krushna!
